Laser Treatment Procedure

Laser Hair Removal in Dunfermline

Face & Body Hair Reduction

A targeted light-based treatment designed to provide long-term reduction of unwanted hair across a range of face and body areas.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses light energy to target melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour. This energy is converted into heat within the hair follicle, helping to reduce its ability to produce new hair.

Because hair grows in different cycles, treatment is carried out over a course of appointments rather than all at once. With each treatment, regrowth can become progressively finer, softer and less visible.

Laser energy is attracted to pigment within the hair and converted into heat at the follicle.

Treatment can be used across many areas of the face and body where unwanted hair is present.

The aim is long-term hair reduction, with regrowth often becoming finer and less noticeable over time.

Several sessions are usually required because individual hairs are at different stages of their growth cycle.

Where Can Laser Hair Removal Be Used?

Face & Body Areas

Laser hair removal can be used across many areas of the face and body. The most appropriate treatment plan will depend on the area, your hair type and how your hair responds over the course of treatment.

Understanding Hair Suitability

Not Every Hair Can Be Treated

Laser relies on pigment within the hair, which means hair colour and type make a difference to treatment. White and grey hairs cannot be effectively targeted because they lack the pigment the laser needs. We also do not recommend treating fine, downy facial hair, as this type of hair can sometimes be stimulated rather than reduced. We will assess the hair before recommending treatment.

Common Questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

We describe laser hair removal as long-term hair reduction rather than permanent hair removal. Treatment can significantly delay and reduce regrowth, but some hair may return over time. Maintenance treatments can therefore be useful after your initial course.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Around six treatments may be needed to see the fuller effect of a course, although some people may require around eight. The number of appointments varies because hairs grow through different stages, and we need to treat them at the appropriate points in their growth cycle.

Which hair colours can be treated?

Laser works by targeting melanin within the hair. Darker pigmented hair therefore responds more readily to treatment. White and grey hairs cannot be effectively treated because they do not contain enough pigment for the laser to target.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

We ask you not to wax, tweeze or pluck the treatment area for four weeks beforehand, as the hair follicle needs to remain present for the laser to target it. The area should be shaved within 24 hours of treatment and should be clean and free from make-up, deodorant, lotion and sun cream when you attend.

What should I avoid after laser hair removal?

Heat remains in the skin following laser treatment, so we recommend avoiding activities that add further heat to the treated area, including the gym, saunas, hot showers and sun exposure immediately afterwards. We will provide aftercare guidance relevant to your treatment area.

Do I need to tell you about medication?

Please tell us about any medication you are taking before treatment, as some medicines can increase sensitivity to light and affect your suitability for laser. We will also ask about previous skin reactions or other relevant medical history before proceeding.
