How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Laser tattoo removal uses short, high-powered pulses of light to target pigment within tattoo ink. The light energy breaks the ink into smaller particles, which can then be gradually dispersed by the body.
At Hart, treatment is carried out using Q-Switched laser technology. Tattoos fade progressively between appointments, which means removal is a process rather than a single treatment. The number of sessions needed varies considerably from one tattoo to another.

SPMU Eyebrows
Short pulses of laser light are absorbed by the tattoo pigment, breaking the ink into smaller particles.
Tattoo pigment is dispersed gradually by the body, so fading continues in the weeks after treatment.
We carry out a consultation and test patch before proceeding with your full laser treatment.
We can also use laser treatment to remove unwanted semi-permanent pigment from the eyebrows.
What Can Affect Your Treatment Plan?
Every Tattoo Is Different
There is no single number of sessions that applies to every tattoo. Factors including its size, position, colours, type of ink and age can all influence treatment. We will also consider your skin type and whether your aim is greater removal or simply to fade the tattoo.

Tattoo Size
The size of your tattoo can affect both the length of your appointments and your overall treatment plan.

Tattoo Location
Where your tattoo sits on the body is one of the factors we consider when planning treatment.

Ink Colours
The colours present within your tattoo can influence how it responds to laser treatment.

Ink & Density
The type and density of ink within the tattoo can affect the number of sessions required.

Tattoo Age
How old your tattoo is is another factor we take into account when estimating treatment requirements.

Your Goal
Your treatment plan may differ depending on whether you want greater removal or simply to fade the tattoo.

Before Your First Treatment
We Start with a
Test Patch
Before we begin laser tattoo removal, we will ask about your medical history and assess whether treatment is suitable for you. You will also have a test patch before progressing with treatment. If you are taking medication, let us know, as some medicines can increase sensitivity to light and may affect whether treatment can safely go ahead.

Common Questions
How does laser tattoo removal work?
We use Q-Switched laser technology to deliver short pulses of light into the tattoo. The tattoo pigment absorbs this energy and breaks into smaller particles. Your body then gradually disperses these particles, causing the tattoo to fade progressively between treatment sessions.
How many tattoo removal sessions will I need?
This varies considerably. The current treatment guidance states that amateur tattoos may take around 1–6 treatments, while professional tattoos can require more and some may take up to 15 sessions. We also consider the tattoo’s size, location, colours, ink, age, your skin type and the level of fading you would like to achieve.
How far apart are tattoo removal treatments?
We generally space tattoo removal sessions around 6–10 weeks apart. This gives your skin time to recover and allows the fading process to continue between appointments. Your treatment schedule will be discussed with you based on how your tattoo and skin respond.
How long does laser tattoo removal take?
The length of an appointment depends largely on the size of the tattoo being treated. Our current guidance gives a general treatment time of approximately 10 –60 minutes. We can give you a better indication once we have assessed your tattoo.
What does tattoo removal feel like?
Most people describe the sensation as similar to a hot pinprick or the flick of an elastic band. There can be some discomfort while the laser is being used, although how treatment feels will vary between individuals and according to the area being treated.
Do I need to tell you about medication?
Yes. Please tell us about any medication you are taking and any previous skin reactions you have experienced. Some medications can increase sensitivity to light, which may increase the risk of side effects and affect whether laser treatment is appropriate for you.
