What Is the National Medical Weight Loss Program?
The National Medical Weight Loss Program is a medically managed approach to weight reduction that may include prescription-only medication alongside support with diet and exercise.
Treatment is not automatically suitable for everyone. Before medication can be prescribed, your medical history and other relevant factors are reviewed to determine whether the programme is appropriate for you. If treatment is suitable, you will also be shown how to administer the medication at home.

A Wider Approach to Weight Management
Medication Is One Part
Prescription treatment is not intended to work in isolation. The National Medical Weight Loss Program combines medication with guidance around diet and exercise, with your suitability considered before treatment begins. The medication is designed to support appetite management, while the wider programme helps you make changes alongside it.

Common Questions
How does the medical weight loss programme work?
We use prescription-only medication as part of a wider medically managed weight reduction programme. The medication is designed to reduce appetite and help you feel fuller sooner, while advice around diet and exercise is provided alongside treatment.
How do I know if I am suitable?
We first need to review your medical history and other relevant health information. The current programme uses factors including BMI and weight-related health conditions when assessing suitability. Completing the medical assessment does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed.
How is the medication taken?
If treatment is prescribed, the medication is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week using an administration pen. We will show you how to administer it at home before you begin treatment.
Will my dose change during the programme?
The current programme starts with a pre-set initial dose. After four weeks, treatment is reviewed and the dose may be increased if appropriate. Any changes to medication should form part of your clinical review rather than being made independently.
Who may not be suitable for treatment?
Prescription weight-management medication is not appropriate for everyone. Your medical history, current health and other relevant factors need to be reviewed before treatment can be prescribed. We will assess your individual suitability rather than assuming the programme is appropriate based on weight alone.
Is medication all I need to lose weight?
No. We use medication as one part of the programme rather than as a standalone solution. Guidance around diet and exercise is also provided, helping you make wider changes alongside any prescription treatment.
